Evidence & Methodology

How we research, evaluate published performance data, and structure objective recommendations.

Independent Editorial Policy

ClariSelect is an independent consumer publication. We do not operate an in-house physical testing laboratory, and we do not conduct physical testing on residential air filters or air purifiers. Our mission is to independently synthesize published third-party laboratory data, accredited industry engineering standards, manufacturer technical documentation, and real-world dimensional tolerances to help homeowners make confident, safe equipment decisions.

Three-Tier Evidence Classification Framework

To ensure total clarity for readers, every technical claim, specification, and comparison on ClariSelect is classified under one of three evidence tiers:

  1. Tier 1 — Independent Third-Party Testing & Published Research: Data generated by accredited independent test facilities or published scientific and industry standards. This includes published ASHRAE Standard 52.2 fractional efficiency test data, AHAM Verified Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) certifications under ANSI/AHAM AC-1, California Air Resources Board (CARB) ozone emissions compliance, and EPA indoor air studies. When referencing third-party test data, we identify the originating standard and testing organization.
  2. Tier 2 — Manufacturer-Reported Technical Specifications: Data, dimensions, and technical claims published directly by product manufacturers in engineering cut sheets and owner manuals. This includes initial static pressure resistance curves, nominal vs. actual dimensions, motor electrical wattage, decibel ratings at specified fan speeds, and warranty terms. We treat manufacturer claims as published assertions rather than established facts, clearly labeling them as manufacturer-reported.
  3. Tier 3 — ClariSelect Editorial Assessment: Objective analysis and calculations performed by our editorial team based on physical compatibility, blower static pressure risk modeling, published 3-year consumable replacement costs, and reader use-case suitability. Our recommendations weigh trade-offs—such as particle capture versus furnace airflow resistance—to help readers select the right filter for their specific HVAC configuration.

ClariSelect Editorial Scoring Methodology

Every rated product on ClariSelect receives an objective numerical editorial score on a 10-point scale (e.g., 8.5 / 10). Please note the following essential disclosures regarding our scoring framework:

  • Editorial Engineering Assessments: All scores are editorial assessments and engineering evaluations conducted by ClariSelect staff. They are not consumer star averages, user polls, or paid commercial endorsements.
  • Derived From Documented Specifications: Scores are derived from documented specifications, accredited third-party standards/testing (e.g., ASHRAE 52.2, ANSI/AHAM AC-1 CADR, AHRI ratings), manufacturer technical documentation, compatibility tolerances, and ownership economics.
  • No In-House Physical Lab Testing: ClariSelect has not performed independent hands-on laboratory testing unless explicitly stated. We analyze, verify, and synthesize published third-party laboratory data and manufacturer engineering cut sheets.
  • Relative Evaluations Within Category: Scores are relative evaluations within their specific product category. Product categories evaluate fundamentally different physical demands using distinct criteria and percentage weights.
  • Do Not Compare Scores Across Categories: Scores must not be compared blindly across unrelated product categories. An 8.2 score on an HVAC furnace filter reflects its performance, resistance balance, and value relative to other furnace filters; it cannot be equated to an 8.2 on a room air purifier or air quality monitor.
  • Zero Silent Defaults & Strict Evidence Gates: We enforce a universal missing-data policy with zero silent defaults—every scoring factor requires documented, substantiated evidence in the product record. Products lacking required evidence are marked “Insufficient Evidence” rather than assigned an arbitrary default score.
  • 100% Weighted Models: Categories use different criteria and weights, with each category model summing to exactly 100%.

The 10-Point Scale Explained

  • 9.0 – 10.0 (Exceptional Performance): Category benchmark equipment delivering premium filtration efficiency, minimal operating drag or whisper-quiet acoustics, robust mechanical framing, and superior long-term ownership value.
  • 8.0 – 8.9 (Strong Residential Recommendation): High-reliability products balancing verified filtration performance with safe operating static pressure headroom, standard blower compatibility, and fair consumable upkeep costs.
  • 7.0 – 7.9 (Good with Meaningful Limitations): Products with documented physical or economic trade-offs—such as basic coil protection with limited sub-micron capture (e.g., standard MERV 8), elevated static pressure drop on older blowers, or high recurring annual replacement expense.
  • 6.0 – 6.9 (Materially Compromised / Situational): Products presenting significant engineering trade-offs, high static resistance risks (>=0.26 in. w.g.), unreinforced framing, or short service cycles.
  • Below 6.0 (Weak Relative to Alternatives): Substandard filtration efficiency, unverified nominal tolerances, or coarse equipment screens.

Universal Evidence Threshold & Handling of Missing Data

ClariSelect enforces an uncompromising evidence threshold across all product categories: we never estimate, guess, or fabricate missing engineering specifications. Every scoring factor requires documented, substantiated evidence in the product record. We never award positive points simply because a field is omitted, and we do not apply silent default values.

Handling of Equipment Outside Standardized Testing Protocols

Certain high-profile manufacturers elect not to participate in standardized voluntary testing programs. For example, brands such as Dyson and Austin Air design to internal or alternative industrial protocols and do not publish standardized ANSI/AHAM AC-1 CADR ratings. In such cases, ClariSelect refuses to fabricate CADR equivalents or generate speculative scores. Rather than misrepresenting these products as 'under evaluation,' we classify them accurately as “Not Comparable Under Current Scoring Model” (Unscored). We publish verified engineering specifications, dimensions, and operational notes while cleanly omitting numerical scores.

Distinction Between Editorial Scores and Badges

Editorial badges (such as “Top Pick” or “Best Value”) are qualitative accolades that highlight specific practical use cases. Badges never overwrite, replace, or substitute for the numerical editorial score. A product may carry a high numerical score without being our recommended choice for every furnace blower motor configuration.

Score Update & Review Policy

Scores are updated whenever new accredited laboratory reports are published, manufacturer engineering cut sheets are revised, or annual consumable retail pricing shifts significantly. Readers and manufacturers may submit technical specification documentation for review to contact@clariselect.com.

Product Selection & Commercial Independence

We select products for coverage based on consumer search demand, residential HVAC compatibility, market availability, and verified filtration standards. Commission rates never influence which products we cover, how they are ranked, or whether we recommend them. If a popular product introduces high airflow resistance or poor value, we state that clearly.

Corrections & Data Verification Policy

Residential HVAC specifications and filter dimensions frequently undergo minor manufacturer revisions. If you identify a discrepancy between our published data and a current manufacturer specification, please contact the ClariSelect team at contact@clariselect.com. We review and verify all reader inquiries against primary source documentation.
